Cardinal Joseph Louis Bernardin, former archbishop of Chicago, was commemorated on the thirtieth anniversary of his death through various events held in Italy's Trento region, where his roots lie.
Cardinal Joseph Louis Bernardin, who served as the Archbishop of Chicago between 1982 and 1996 and passed away in 1996, was commemorated in Italy's Trento region, where his roots originate. As part of the commemorative activities organized by the Archdiocese of Trento, the towns of Rovereto and Trento were also included in the programs.
Within the framework of the commemorative events, Chicago Archbishop Cardinal Blase Joseph Cupich gave a lecture in Fiera di Primiero. Following the program held on Friday evening, the three-day events concluded on Saturday evening with a Mass presided over by Cardinal Cupich at the Trento Cathedral.
In his lecture, Cardinal Cupich discussed Bernardin's legacy and the historic speech he delivered in 1983 at Fordham University. In that speech, Bernardin introduced the approach of a "consistent ethic of life," which unites issues such as abortion, the death penalty, and nuclear armament under a comprehensive commitment to human life.
