China opens a joint airfield in Laos with construction ongoing and eyes on its military role

China has officially inaugurated a joint airport and training center in the Ban Keun region of Laos. Satellite imagery revealed that construction work was still ongoing even at the time of the facility's official opening, and the center's potential military role has sparked regional concerns.

Opening of the Ban Keun Facility

The Ban Keun airport and training center, established jointly by China and Laos, opened its doors with an official ceremony. Satellite imagery showed that construction work was still ongoing in many areas even during the opening ceremony held in September.

Beijing's Cross-Border Moves

This airport, operated jointly with Laos, marks China's first military facility focused on air power outside its borders. The project constitutes the latest link in Beijing's efforts to increase its global power projection, alongside its base in Djibouti and the Ream naval facility in Cambodia.

Regional Concerns and the Vietnam Factor

Neighbors and defense experts of Laos, a landlocked country with a population of about 8 million, are closely monitoring the facility. Experts draw attention to what the project could evolve into in the future rather than its current strength.

The Ban Keun airport is located approximately 50 kilometers north of the capital Vientiane and the Thai border. The project is considered a source of concern, particularly for neighboring Vietnam, which has territorial disputes with Beijing in the South China Sea.

Technical Details in Satellite Imagery

Satellite imagery shows that the Ban Keun airport features a runway approximately 2,000 meters long, a parallel taxiway, and a parking apron with a capacity for twenty-two aircraft. It is noted that the current runway allows for the use of fighter jets.

Analyses of the imagery reveal that there is sufficient space to extend the runway by at least another 1,000 meters. This potential expansion could pave the way for the facility to be used by larger aircraft, including bombers.

Statement by the Chinese Ministry of Defense

The Chinese Ministry of Defense announced the opening of the facility last month, clarifying the purpose of the China-Laos Joint Support and Training Center and the Friendship Aviation Academy in Ban Keun. The ministry stated that the facilities aim to strengthen the training of Lao air force pilots and are not directed at any third party.
