China Warns of Retaliation Against US DeepSeek AI Ban
China reacted to the US federal civil agencies banning DeepSeek artificial intelligence products, warning of retaliation and criticizing the move.
China strongly reacted to the US government banning the products of artificial intelligence startup DeepSeek in federal civilian agencies, warning of potential retaliatory measures. With an instruction dated the end of July, the US Department of Homeland Security had requested the removal of DeepSeek products and third-party services developed using this infrastructure from IT systems.
According to a notice published by the US Department of Homeland Security, civil agencies were barred from procuring these products due to concerns that DeepSeek servers are located in China and that Chinese authorities could access private company infrastructure and sensitive US data. Official statements came from the Beijing administration following this development. Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stated that they would resolutely safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese companies, expressing opposition to the overextension of the concept of national security. The Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the US ignored the consensus reached between leaders Xi Jinping and Donald Trump and the general framework of bilateral economic and trade relations. While DeepSeek did not respond to requests for comment, leaders are expected to meet at the APEC summit to be held in Shenzhen in mid-November. Beijing also submitted proposals last week to restrict the export of certain advanced artificial intelligence models.
