Closed San Francisco Centre Mall Could Be Converted Into AI Hub
A proposal has been submitted to convert the closed San Francisco Centre shopping mall into an artificial intelligence hub and data center.
A new proposal has emerged to convert the closed San Francisco Centre downtown mall into an artificial intelligence hub. A partnership between Maryland-based K-G Growth Partners and an unnamed AI laboratory has requested permission to transform the former Bloomingdale's space into an AI data center.
According to the proposal by K-G Growth Partners and an undisclosed AI laboratory, public spaces on the lower floors of the building would remain open while technology operations are conducted on the upper floors. The firm managing the project stated that it will differ from a standard data center, aiming to serve as a live example demonstrating how artificial intelligence can work alongside the community.
The project is still in its early stages; an official permit application has not been filed yet, and the sale of the property has not been finalized. Additionally, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie signing an executive order pausing approvals for new data center projects for 45 days is among the factors that could pose an obstacle to the project.
