Cold sore virus tears 10-day-old baby away from life

Meg Edmonds, a 22-year-old living in the UK, lost her 10-day-old baby Magnolia after the HSV-1 virus was transmitted to the newborn, following the attribution of sores that formed on her lips and mouth on the day of delivery to hormonal causes.
Meg Edmonds, living in the UK, gave birth to her daughter Magnolia on February 1st. While the baby fed well and stayed awake for the first two days, she began sleeping constantly from the third day onwards and did not wake up to feed. In the following days, symptoms such as difficulty breathing, a weak and high-pitched cry, a rash on the chest area, eye pain, and paleness were observed in the baby. Upon the family's applications, the situation was associated with breastfeeding problems, weight loss, and jaundice.
Mother Edmonds had asked healthcare workers about the painful sores that formed in her mouth and on her lips on the day she gave birth, but received the response that this condition could stem from hormonal changes or insufficient water consumption. Although the breastfeeding process became painful as the sores spread to her nipples, she continued to feed her baby by expressing breast milk.
The baby, whose condition worsened, was taken to the Birmingham Children's Hospital pediatric intensive care unit. Magnolia, who was stated to have multiple organs affected as the infection spread throughout her body, suffered a cardiac arrest next to her family and passed away on February 11th at 10 days old. While tests confirmed that the mother carried the HSV-1 virus, it was not determined how the virus was definitively transmitted to the baby or where it was contracted.
