COP17: The world has a plan to save nature. Is it working?

The United Nations Biodiversity Conference (COP17) is convening in Yerevan, Armenia, from October 19 to 30, 2026. As a critical juncture for achieving the goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework adopted in 2022, the conference aims to evaluate the progress of 196 parties toward the 23 targets set for 2030 and four long-term goals for 2050.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized accountability, noting that while many countries have set national targets, less than half are on track to achieve them. Key agenda items for the conference include closing implementation gaps, securing at least $200 billion in annual biodiversity funding, developing the Cali Fund for the sharing of benefits from genetic resources, and improving data monitoring processes.

COP17 President and Armenian Minister of Environment Hambardzum Matevosyan stated that the conference must determine the current state of global efforts and identify the necessary changes to accelerate action.
