Cost of Living Protests in Italy Turn Violent
Protests organized due to the high cost of living in Italy turned into violence in Milan, Turin, and Bologna, while Prime Minister Meloni condemned the demonstrations.
Following demonstrations organized across Italy to protest the cost of living, low wages, and high rents turning into violent incidents, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the events and expressed support for the security forces. During the incidents in Milan, Turin, and Bologna, police officers were injured, arrests were made, and material damage occurred.
Protests held across Italy on Saturday spun out of control in some areas and turned into violent actions. Clashes broke out between demonstrators and police around the historic Duomo Cathedral in Milan. According to information reported by the Associated Press, 50 demonstrators were detained in Milan and at least two police officers were injured. During the events, some individuals reportedly looted stores and broke windows inside the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II.
The main agenda items of the protests were the rising cost of living, low wages, high rents, and deficiencies in public services. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni stated that criminals and organized groups exploited these demonstrations to spread chaos and violence, and she called on the political opposition to openly condemn the violent acts. While similar incidents occurred in the cities of Turin and Bologna, railway station operations were suspended as a precaution, and numerous security personnel were injured across the country.
