Countdown to Dakar 2026: Africa's First Olympic Excitement
Preparations and the Olympic atmosphere in the city are drawing intense interest for the Dakar 2026 Summer Youth Olympic Games, which will start on October 31 under Senegal's host.
Preparations and the countdown are continuing at full speed in the capital Dakar for the 4th Summer Youth Olympic Games (Dakar 2026), which will be hosted by Senegal from October 31 to November 13. Bearing the distinction of being the first Olympic organization to be held on the African continent, the Games are preparing to host competitions in the Diamniadio and Saly regions alongside Dakar.
The capital's boulevards, squares, and historical sites have been adorned with Dakar 2026 posters, giant billboards, and statues of the official mascot "Ayo", designed by high school student Ndeye Mariama Diop. Inspired by a lion figure meaning "joy" in the Yoruba language, Ayo's statues in various sports branches are flocked by the public and visitors. A countdown clock installed in front of the historical train station increases the excitement by showing the remaining time until the start of the Olympics.
The organization will be held at 8 venues across three main regions: Dakar, Diamniadio, and Saly. While facilities such as the Iba Mar Diop Stadium, Tour de l'Oeuf Olympic Swimming Pool, and Dakar Arena are being renovated or utilized, athletes will be accommodated at the Amadou Mahtar Mbow University campus in Diamniadio. In the organization where 2,700 athletes aged 15-18 from approximately 200 countries will compete in 35 disciplines, the number of female and male athletes has been equalized for the first time, and the Refugee Olympic Team will also take part for the first time.
