Climate change pushed Earth to its limits in 2026 as certain "vital signs" reach record extremes, report says

According to a comprehensive report published in the journal BioScience, the climate crisis pushed Earth's environmental system to its limits and perhaps beyond in 2026.

Indicators Reaching Record Levels

Seven out of 16 core climate indicators measuring Earth's condition are currently at record stages. Sudden changes and acceleration are being observed in many indicators.

Critical Climate Indicators

Critical indicators examined in the comprehensive report include greenhouse gases, temperature levels, glacier masses, ocean conditions, wildfires, and planetary energy imbalance.

Temperature and Carbon Records

While July 2026 was recorded as the hottest month in the history of the contiguous United States, ocean temperatures also reached new peaks. Carbon dioxide rates in the atmosphere are hovering at their highest level in the past 2 million years.

Extreme Heat in Europe

Severe heatwaves scorching the European continent led to the deaths of approximately 14,000 people.

Increase in the Speed of Global Warming

The speed of global warming has gained significant acceleration over the years. Between 1880 and 1970, an average increase of 0.05 degrees was observed per decade, while this rate rose to 0.19 degrees in the 1970-2010 period and to 0.36 degrees in the 2010-2024 period.

Precautions to be Taken for the Future

Researchers emphasized that making rapid cuts in greenhouse gas emissions and societal-level transformation are of vital importance to mitigate climate risks.
