Turnout so far highest on record as Israelis vote in pivotal election

As voters head to the polls in what is seen as one of the most critical general elections in the country's history, it has been reported that the voter turnout has reached its highest level ever. Polls published on Friday show that incumbent Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former military chief Gadi Eisenkot are neck-and-neck in the race for the premiership. However, it is projected that neither political bloc will reach the 61 seats required to form a government.

While the campaign process has been shaped around issues of democracy and security, the election is generally viewed as a referendum on Netanyahu's rule. Throughout election day, Netanyahu stated on his social media accounts that turnout among Arab voters was high and issued an emergency call for the Israeli right; Eisenkot's campaign team reacted to these statements. While leading parties made allegations of irregularities at the polls, Israel's Central Election Commission announced that there was no evidence of systematic fraud. It is stated that because neither bloc can easily secure a majority, the political landscape could face deadlock or complex coalition negotiations.
