Curfew Declared in Paris Due to Violent Incidents
Following violent incidents triggered by protests over the cost of living and student issues in France, a curfew has been imposed in certain areas of Paris.
Following days of violent protests, looting, and clashes across France, the Paris police have declared a nighttime curfew in two areas of the capital. In the wake of security breaches, Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez's resignation was rejected by President Emmanuel Macron.
According to the decision made by the Paris police, a curfew will be in effect in the Place de la République and Les Halles areas from 11:00 PM on Monday night until 6:00 AM on Tuesday morning. Additionally, all kinds of gatherings and demonstrations have been banned in these areas starting from 8:00 PM. Nationwide, at least 2,400 people have been detained so far, and approximately 3,000 businesses have been reported damaged or looted.
Curfew measures for children and youth under 18 starting from the evening hours were also implemented in several cities, including Lille in northern France and Nice on the Mediterranean coast. While Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez acknowledged that they had lost control in some major cities, President Macron did not accept Nuñez's resignation, citing the necessity of continuing security operations, and requested a transparent investigation into the planning and intelligence gaps behind the incidents along with the implementation of new tactics.
