Curfews Declared in Several Cities in France Following Severe Incidents
Following a weekend of violent protests and looting across France, partial curfews have been implemented in several cities including Paris, Lille, and Nice.
Authorities took action following anti-government protests, looting incidents, and security vulnerabilities that lasted throughout the weekend in France. While Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu ruled out the possibility of a general curfew, partial and local curfews were put into effect in various cities, including Paris, Lille, and Nice.
In Paris, police banned demonstrations in certain areas starting from 8:00 PM and imposed a curfew around the Place de la Republic and Les Halles that will last until 6:00 AM on Tuesday. Similar measures, including age restrictions, were announced in other localities such as Lyon, Coulaines, Douai, Wattignies, and Denain.
Following the events, President Emmanuel Macron rejected Interior Minister Laurent Nunez's offer to resign. Macron instructed Nunez to end the barricades and looting, and to ensure transparency regarding planning and intelligence vulnerabilities.
It was reported that between 2,300 and 2,400 people were detained across the country throughout the weekend, and approximately 1,000 police officers and gendarmes were injured. Meanwhile, trade unions in France called for a new wave of strikes and rallies on November 5.
