Rockstar Games' highly anticipated new title, Grand Theft Auto 6 (GTA 6), has reopened the debate on how bonds formed with fictional characters in video games affect real-life relationships, due to the relationship dynamics between the main characters, Jason and Lucia.

Previews of the game show that characters can develop their bond through daily activities such as shopping, sports, and social interactions, alongside their adventures in the criminal underworld. This has raised the question of how emotional bonds formed by players with in-game characters are perceived by their real-life partners.

In a study conducted by YouGov in the UK with over 4,000 adults, 6% of participants defined forming a relationship with a fictional character as cheating, while 19% stated they would find this situation problematic. The research results revealed that women approach such in-game interactions more negatively than men.

Assessment: Experts point out that the success of games in mimicking social relationships is increasing. Associate Professor Arienne Ferchaud from Florida State University predicts that with artificial intelligence integration, players will be able to have more natural and deep conversations with characters in the future, which could make the perception of fictional relationships more complex.
