US federal prosecutors announced that charges have been brought against a 19-year-old suspect who allegedly gave fentanyl, disguised as cocaine, to a female Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) student in New York before raping her and causing her death.

According to an announcement made by the US Department of Justice on Thursday, another friend who was given fentanyl also narrowly escaped death due to an overdose. A total of three people have been charged in connection with the incident.

The 19-year-old suspect, named Moises Freire, faces charges of conspiring to distribute fentanyl and distributing a lethal drug for the purpose of sexual assault. As part of the investigation, 18-year-old Brian Peralta Cabrera was also charged with a narcotics conspiracy.

Harry Rosales Pino, the third defendant in the case, had pleaded guilty in September to charges of conspiring to distribute narcotics resulting in death and serious bodily injury.
