Denver City Council Rejects AI Chatbot Contract
The City Council did not approve the extension of the agreement with AI service provider Citibot on the grounds that it provided incorrect information and reduced human employment.
The future of Sunny, an AI-based chatbot serving in the city of Denver, has become uncertain. The City Council rejected the renewal of the contract with the company, raising the possibility that the application may be shut down following the decision.
City Council Decision
The Denver City Council rejected a five-year contract extension and an additional $3.9 million budget with Citibot. Nine council members voted against the agreement, arguing that the program provided inaccurate information and replaced human labor.
Administration's Defense
Mayor Mike Johnston stated that AI tools like Sunny build trust with residents. An administration spokesperson stated that the application reduced the workload of employees and lowered wait times at the 311 call center.
Other Technology Contracts
During Tuesday's meeting, the council also turned down a planned $5 million business intelligence and technology services contract with Slalom Inc. by a 10-2 vote. In contrast, the Key Lime Air and Denver Air Connection airport lease agreement was approved.
