System Goes Live on November 1
Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş announced that the new system regulating social media use for children under 15 will be put into effect as of November 1.
With the regulation, an e-Government integrated age verification system becomes mandatory on platforms, while companies have been granted until March 31, 2027, to comply.
Digital Code and Re-Verification
The new system will cover not only account openings but also the usage process, and those who want to create accounts on social networks will be able to transact with a digital code they will obtain via e-Government.
If platforms suspect that an account is managed by someone under the age of 15, they will suspend the account and request re-verification.
New Rules for Youth
In order to reduce screen addiction, radical changes are being made to the social media experience of youth aged 15-18, and users in this age group will be prevented from broadcasting live streams.
Additionally, taking screen recordings will be prevented, and algorithmic features such as scrolling and infinite scrolling will be disabled.
Public Audit and Parental Supervision
Thanks to the two-way control mechanism, accounts opened without the knowledge of parents will be detected by platform algorithms and redirected back to e-Government approval.
The system, where data will be kept entirely within the e-Government infrastructure, will be operated directly under public audit without being left to the initiative of social media companies.
