Assoc. Prof. Dr. Gökhan Altın, an Ear, Nose, and Throat Diseases Specialist at Medipol Mega University Hospital, stated that eardrum tears that have not healed for a long time or cause hearing loss should be treated surgically.

Symptoms and Expert Warnings

Hearing loss, discharge, or frequently recurring infections in the ear can be significant indicators of a tear in the eardrum. When such symptoms are experienced, it is necessary to consult an ear, nose, and throat specialist without wasting time.

Causes of Tears

The eardrum can be damaged and torn as a result of infections, impacts, sudden pressure changes, foreign objects, and the improper use of cotton swabs.

Situations Requiring Surgical Repair

Small perforations due to trauma can usually heal on their own; however, tears that have not healed for a long time, are large, or cause hearing loss require surgical intervention.

Tympanoplasty Method and Success Rate

During the treatment process, the tympanoplasty method is applied, using natural tissues taken from the muscle membrane behind the ear or the cartilage tissue in front of the ear as a graft. In suitable patients, the success rate of this surgery reaches between 85 and 90 percent.
