The total number of Bundibugyo Ebola virus cases, appearing for the first time in Kenya, has reached eight. While the ongoing outbreak in the region has affected thousands of people, a quarantine facility established by the US at the Laikipia air base has triggered local public backlash and legal proceedings.

Following the death in a hospital on October 5 of an individual who fell ill in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and traveled to Nairobi via Uganda, contact tracing efforts resulted in seven more individuals testing positive. Director General for Health Patrick Amoth confirmed that the total number of infections in the country has reached eight, while approximately 108 people have been placed in quarantine in Nairobi.

These developments brought to light US cuts to global health assistance and a controversial quarantine center established at the Laikipia air base in Kenya. A Kenyan court issued a suspension order regarding the center, which has faced opposition from local residents and sparked protests, with the case expected to be decided in November.
