European Central Bank Governing Council member Pierre Wunsch announced that further interest rate hikes are likely in order to combat an inflation rate approaching the 4 percent level.

Rate Hike May Be Necessary

National Bank of Belgium Governor Pierre Wunsch made evaluations regarding monetary policy in an exclusive interview with Bloomberg Television.

Wunsch stated that they will probably have to raise interest rates again within the scope of the fight against inflation.

Decisions Depend on Data

Stating that it does not matter much whether the increase will be made at the October or December meetings, National Bank of Belgium Governor Wunsch emphasized that the steps to be taken will depend entirely on incoming data.

Wunsch avoided making definitive statements regarding the timing of a potential rate hike due to current uncertainties in energy markets.

Economists' Expectations

Market economists expect the European Central Bank to implement a 25 basis point rate hike at its December meeting and raise the deposit interest rate to 2.75 percent.

Officials report that the pressure on inflation currently stems largely from energy prices, while second-round effects such as wage increases have not yet been observed.

Energy and Bond Yields

European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde stated that high energy prices are pushing inflation upward, but this situation has not yet fully spread across the broader economy.

Lagarde also warned that the notable rise in bond yields could suppress economic activity much more than expected.

France and Borrowing Costs

Bank of France official Emmanuel Moulin stated that rising bond yields could tighten financial conditions, weaken aggregate demand, and lead the bank to respond more moderately to shocks.

France's rising borrowing costs have brought the European Central Bank's Transmission Protection Instrument, which can be deployed against market volatility, back to the agenda.

Global Debt Discussions

Rising public borrowing costs were among the primary topics highlighted at the International Monetary Fund annual meetings held in Bangkok.

International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva urged all policymakers to take urgent steps to reduce high public debts and budget deficits.
