Ecofilm Platform on the Way to COP31 with Sustainable Cinema Steps
Founded by young entrepreneurs, the Ecofilm Platform is launching projects for the COP31 process with guides prepared to reduce the carbon footprint of the cinema industry.
While the environmental impacts of the cinema industry are being discussed, the Ecofilm Platform, established in Turkey, is implementing important projects for the COP31 process by preparing sustainable production and content creation guides.
It is calculated that high-budget blockbuster films of the cinema industry generate an average of 3,370 metric tons of emissions until they are projected on the big screen; this amount is equal to the annual electricity consumption of approximately 656 homes. While cinema is pointed to as one of the industries making the largest contribution to air pollution in the Los Angeles metropolitan area, transportation holds the largest share in the industry's carbon footprint with 51 percent. According to Grand View Research reports, while the global size of the cinema industry reaches 120.8 billion dollars and records an annual growth of 9.7 percent, the US stands as the largest market and is followed by China. Meanwhile, while Turkey ranks as the world's second-largest TV series exporter, it is calculated that an average of 30 to 50 metric tons of carbon emissions are created per episode. The film "Bir Zamanlar Gelecek: 2121" (Once Upon a Time in the Future: 2121), directed by Serpil Altın in Turkey, is recorded as Turkey's first certified sustainable green film production.
