Cardiology Specialist Dr. Ercan Türk reported that beyond protecting against respiratory infections, the flu vaccine also has a significant protective effect on cardiovascular health. Emphasizing that the vaccine reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and sudden cardiac death, Dr. Türk explained that individuals in the risk group should get vaccinated during the autumn and winter months.

It has been stated that the flu vaccine, commonly known in society as providing protection solely against respiratory infections, also has protective effects on cardiovascular health. Scientific research conducted in recent years reveals that the vaccine significantly reduces the risk of heart attack, stroke, and sudden cardiac death. Against flu cases that increase as the weather cools down, it is important that individuals, especially those with chronic illnesses, do not neglect the vaccine. Cardiology Specialist Dr. Ercan Türk stated that the flu vaccine is one of the safe and effective ways to protect heart health.

The inflammation caused by the influenza virus in the body can lead to the narrowing of blood vessels and clot formation, increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. While the increased oxygen demand and workload of the heart during an infection can trigger a crisis in coronary artery patients, fever and fluid loss can also cause rhythm disorders. The vaccine prevents flu-related inflammation, reduces the formation of blood clots, and alleviates stress on the heart.

The vaccine, which does not contain live viruses and does not cause the flu, is recommended to be administered every year between September and November. The vaccine, whose protection lasts for approximately 6 to 12 months, is advised to be administered every autumn period to individuals with cardiovascular disease, individuals over the age of 65, chronic lung, kidney, or diabetes patients, pregnant women, those with weakened immunity, healthcare workers, and those working in crowded areas.
