Tennis star Svitolina says emotional toll of Ukraine war led to Monfils separation

Ukrainian tennis star Elina Svitolina announced that she and former French tennis player Gaël Monfils have ended their marriage due to the emotional toll and internal effects of the war in her country. Svitolina announced the couple's decision to separate, having married in 2021 and having one child, through her social media account.

World number six Elina Svitolina, 32, shared the wounds and internal struggles inflicted on her by the conflict in Ukraine in a post on her Instagram account. Growing up in Odesa, Svitolina emphasized the profound meaning her country holds for her, along with the sleepless nights and doubts brought on by the war. Stating that her husband Gaël Monfils respected her decision and listened to her, Svitolina expressed that while their marriage has ended, their family structure will continue, and their 4-year-old daughter Skai will always come first.

Gaël Monfils, 40, was listed among retired players by the International Tennis Integrity Agency last week and withdrew from professional tournaments. Following Monfils's removal from anti-doping protocols, the 13-time ATP Tour champion is expected to prepare for a new career in finance at a Swiss asset management firm.
