Elon Musk takes responsibility for Starlink speed restrictions in Ukraine
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk confirmed that he imposed speed restrictions on Starlink in Ukraine, stating that its use in offensive drone strikes violated terms of service. Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the restrictions have been lifted and access has returned to normal.
Elon Musk confirmed that SpaceX imposed speed restrictions on its Starlink satellite internet service in Ukraine. Musk argued that this decision was made because the Ukrainian military used the service—provided for civilian purposes—in offensive drone operations, which violated the terms of service.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that access speeds for Starlink and its military version, Starshield, which had disrupted frontline operations for over a week, have been restored to their previous levels. Zelenskyy stated that the speed increase began overnight and reached a level supporting logistics and defense activities by Saturday morning.
Musk emphasized that the use of Starlink in offensive drone attacks was never approved. He also stated that changes to the Starshield service intended for military use are controlled by the U.S. government.
