Emphasis on Standardization for Artificial Intelligence Evaluators

Speaking at the TechCrunch Disrupt event, Hugging Face Policy Chief Irene Solaiman stated that the embedded evaluators debated in the AI industry do not offer an easy solution, and that model testing is still in its maturity phase regarding reproducibility and standardization.
AI labs rely on benchmarking systems to measure models' superiority over one another. However, Solaiman pointed out that the methodologies behind these tests are complex and that the industry needs a more consistent scientific foundation to rely on them. Emphasizing that reproducibility plays a critical role in the reliability of results, Solaiman drew attention to the importance of model access, particularly open weights.
In addition to test validation, the question of how one evaluation compares to others remains unclear. The qualifications of embedded evaluators, positioned as neutral observers in the industry, need to be standardized for which tasks they will be effective in. On the other hand, moves such as Anthropic hiring Accenture as its first evaluator have brought criticism along with them.
Stating that evaluations now cover the entire system—including interfaces and agents—rather than just the model itself, Solaiman noted that agent-based testing is difficult and costly. A more uniform and industry-wide approach is needed for industry leaders to continue using benchmarks as a useful tool.
