Employee Arrested After Secret Recording Device Found in OpenAI Office
OpenAI employee Abdulrahman Alfozan has been charged with allegedly placing a hidden recording device in an executive conference room at the San Francisco office.
Abdulrahman Alfozan, a Saudi Arabian citizen and software engineer at OpenAI, has been arrested and charged by the U.S. Department of Justice for allegedly placing a hidden audio and video recording device in an executive conference room at the company's San Francisco office.
Discovery of the Device and Investigation Process
OpenAI's security team and company employees discovered a hidden recording device in an executive conference room at the San Francisco office in the final days of September. Prosecutors stated that the device in question had been planted two days prior to its discovery.
Company management reported the situation to official authorities and the FBI. Using its own artificial intelligence models to identify the suspect, OpenAI conducted a detailed analysis of the forensic footage and data retrieved from the device.
Device Found in the Conference Room
According to information shared by the U.S. Department of Justice, the device found inside the television in the conference room, wrapped in toilet paper, was a small microphone and camera system model known as the Seeed Studio XIAO ESP32-S3 Sense.
As part of the ongoing investigation, it was determined that the suspect used a productivity tool to research office information and conducted searches regarding device setup and remote access through a chatbot account belonging to his spouse.
Security Cameras and the Second Device
Security camera footage showed Alfozan wandering near the conference room and returning to the scene on October 5 to check the device. During this inspection, it was revealed that the suspect accidentally recorded a selfie of himself.
During a search conducted in another part of the building on the same day, OpenAI security personnel recovered an unattended bag belonging to Alfozan containing his ID, wallet, and a second similar recording device.
Legal Proceedings and Upcoming Hearing
Legal action has been initiated against Abdulrahman Alfozan on charges of attempting to record oral communications through electronic or mechanical devices. The defendant is scheduled to appear before a federal magistrate on October 19.
If found guilty during the court proceedings, Alfozan could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000.
