In a statement made in Strasbourg, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen drew attention to the geopolitical importance of the Arctic region and shared the new strategy, which covers security, climate, economic development, and support for the region's inhabitants, with the public.

The new strategy aims to mitigate the negative impacts of warming in the Arctic on Europe and to protect Europe's interests in the face of geopolitical competition in the region. In this context, the European Union plans to enhance the security of critical infrastructure by cooperating with member states and NATO.

Security measures include developing icebreaker ship capacity and establishing new centers to protect undersea cables. Additionally, it has been decided to provide over 1 billion euros in financial support for development projects in the region between 2021 and 2027.
