A violent explosion at a building in Athens' historic Plaka district near the Acropolis resulted in the deaths of six people, including four American tourists, a British national, and a Greek national.

The Incident

A powerful explosion occurred on Friday in a residential building located in the historic Plaka district of Athens. The blast on a small street between the Acropolis and the Temple of Zeus caused massive destruction in the surrounding area.

Rescue Operations

As a result of operations conducted by fire and rescue teams, the lifeless bodies of all six people in the building were recovered by Saturday afternoon. Fire department spokesman Vassilis Vathrakogiannis shared details regarding the search operation on a television broadcast.

Identities of the Deceased

It was determined that four of those who lost their lives in the tragedy were citizens of the United States. It was established that these American tourists were staying in a rented property and had missed their flight at the Athens airport.

Other Victims

Along with the American tourists, those who lost their lives included a British national and a Greek national, who were reported to be an elderly couple living in the building. British Foreign Office officials stated that they are in contact with local authorities regarding the matter.
