COMMENTARY: Five AI quirks and conundrums to watch this earnings season

As the earnings season gets underway in the US, investors' positions in the field of artificial intelligence are hardening, bringing five prominent anomalies and contradictions in the market to the forefront.

According to JPMorgan Private Bank data, since ChatGPT was launched in November 2022, artificial intelligence-focused stocks have accounted for 75 percent of S&P 500 returns, 80 percent of earnings growth, and 90 percent of capital expenditure growth. During this process, while equities rose, bonds issued to finance artificial intelligence investments traded at weak levels, revealing a stock-bond divergence.

Other elements catching attention in the market include divergent views among Wall Street analysts regarding the Nvidia-backed CoreWeave, a slowdown in token spending growth despite increased token usage, and energy supply chain bottlenecks leading to power shortages in data centers. For instance, Microsoft withdrew from an Nscale data center deal in the UK. Furthermore, it is emphasized that massive revenues must be generated by 2032 to justify infrastructure and financing costs estimated between 7 trillion and 10.3 trillion dollars.
