‘Synthetic twin’: Why Socceroo Cristian Volpato is the latest footballer to license his AI clone

Cristian Volpato, the 22-year-old footballer for the Socceroos and Serie A side Sassuolo, has signed a contract with California-based company Callandor to commercialize his AI-generated digital twin.

Under the agreement signed in mid-September, Callandor acquired exclusive rights to Volpato's digital likeness, voice, biometric profiles, and performance data. The company plans to use this data for brand collaborations and managing the athlete's digital presence.

Co-founded by former Sony Pictures and MGM executive Michael Fisk, Callandor aims to enable athletes to interact with fans 24/7, creating opportunities in areas such as personalized training apps and foreign-language voiceovers. This step is considered part of a trend for athletes to take control of their digital rights amid the rise of unauthorized deepfake content in the sports world.
