Beachgoers Stranded In Cliffside Cave Rescued By Coastguard Teams In UK

Four men who struggled with difficult water conditions and became trapped in a cave on the coast of Thornwick Bay in North Yorkshire, England, were safely rescued through a joint operation by coastguard and lifeboat teams.

Notice and Beginning of the Incident

The Bridlington Coastguard Rescue Team announced that they received a report regarding four individuals struggling in the water on Saturday. Upon arriving at the scene, the teams determined that the individuals were facing difficult water conditions.

Initial assessments revealed that one person had reached the shore, another was still in the water, and the remaining two had entered a cave to seek shelter.

Joint Rescue Operation

Bridlington Coastguard, the Filey Coastguard Rescue Team, and Flamborough RNLI teams worked together to rescue the individuals.

After the person in the water was pulled from the sea by lifeboat and coastguard teams, they were transported by helicopter to be handed over to medical teams on land.

Access to Individuals in the Cave

It was stated that it was not possible to rescue the two people in the cave from the air due to the presence of steep cliffs, prompting the dispatch of a shore rescue team to the area.

An attending technician descended by rope to within about five metres of the trapped individuals to assess the situation, during which time it was observed that tidal conditions were beginning to improve.

Conclusion of the Operation

RNLI rescue personnel successfully evacuated the two individuals stranded in the cave from their location.

These rescued individuals were also transferred to a helicopter and handed over to emergency personnel on land for necessary interventions and checks.
