Efforts to raise hundreds of billions of dollars to protect oceans, forests, rivers, and lakes worldwide have fallen short of their target ahead of a major United Nations biodiversity summit, COP17, to be held in Yerevan, Armenia.

The significant gap between nations' official goals for protecting biodiversity and the amount raised so far will be one of the main agenda items of the summit starting on Monday. Scheduled to last about two weeks and end on October 30, the event provides an opportunity for nearly 200 countries party to the agreement to assess progress on 23 global targets following the historic agreement reached in Montreal in 2022. Meanwhile, the United States is not a party to the agreement.
