Cases and Network Water in Tokat

In Tokat, the number of applications made to healthcare institutions with complaints of nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea since October 9 has exceeded 5,000.

Initial examinations showed that the values in the network water were normal, which strengthened the possibility of norovirus as the reason behind this situation.

Symptoms and Transmission Routes of Norovirus

Dr. Gökçe Demir, an Infectious Diseases and Clinical Microbiology Specialist at Istanbul Florence Nightingale Hospital, stated that norovirus is a microorganism that causes inflammation of the stomach and intestines.

She stated that severe nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes abdominal pain are frequently seen in people infected with this microbe, and that the condition can occur in all age groups.

Epidemic Risk in Communal Living Areas

Experts noted that norovirus can survive for a long time in the external environment and can be easily transmitted through infected water, food, and contact.

It was pointed out that the risk of an epidemic is high, especially in communal living areas such as schools, nurseries, dormitories, and dining halls.

Ways of Protection and the Situation in Istanbul

It was emphasized that severe vomiting and diarrhea can lead to fluid loss, and that especially small children are under great risk during this process.

While it was stated that hand hygiene is one of the most effective precautions against the disease, information was shared that there is no intensive increase observed in Istanbul for now.
