Heavy rain and hail across Turkey damage agricultural lands
Heavy rain and hail observed in various regions of the country caused damage to agricultural lands; thousands of acres of land and greenhouses were affected in Adapazarı, Manavgat, and Demre.
Recent heavy rains and hail across Turkey caused destruction in agricultural production areas. According to initial assessments, 10,000 acres of agricultural land in Adapazarı and 381 decares in Manavgat were damaged, while 70 percent of greenhouses in Demre were flooded.
Heavy rain and hail affecting different regions of the country negatively impacted agricultural production. While 10,000 acres of cultivated land were damaged in Adapazarı, it was reported that the water level reached 1 meter in some fields. TZOB Sakarya Adapazarı Chamber of Agriculture President Ercan Ateş stated that half of the farmers in the region were affected by the precipitation, and only 20 percent of registered farmers had TARSİM insurance.
Yalova Chamber of Agriculture President Şaban Beşli stated that agricultural lands were damaged in the Armutlu, Esenköy, and Altınova regions. It was stated that if the rains continue in the region where olive and kiwifruit production takes place, soil quality could decline and next year's harvest yield could also be affected.
Damage occurred in 70 percent of the greenhouses in Çevreli Neighborhood, attached to Antalya's Demre district. Manavgat Chamber of Agriculture President Rasim Metin stated that a total area of 381 decares, consisting of 315 decares of zucchini, 36 decares of eggplant, 10 decares of cabbage, and 20 decares of citrus orchards, was affected by the hail and called for support.
TZOB Board Member Arslan Soydan noted that authorities are conducting on-site inspections and that the extent of the damage is expected to become clear. While it is stated that products being damaged at the harvest stage could affect market prices, efforts are ongoing to determine the final impact of the losses.
