Heists Targeting AI Data Center Equipment
Organized cargo thefts targeting trucks carrying AI data center equipment in the U.S. have resulted in losses exceeding $100 million since June 2026.
Shipments of servers and equipment being transported to AI data center construction sites across the U.S. have become targets for organized crime groups, leading to tens of millions of dollars in losses.
According to an NBC report, criminals are intentionally targeting high-value cargo. In an incident in Fayetteville, Georgia, a security vehicle was rammed and stopped, and a trailer containing $13 million worth of server equipment was stolen. A similar incident occurred during a $10 million server rack shipment bound for Texas; in this case, the security vehicle was also rammed, and the GPS tracking device was manipulated.
Private cargo theft investigator Gerardo Pachuca stated that these incidents are deliberate and that thieves are targeting specific high-value loads. Keith Lewis of Verisk CargoNet noted that stealing this equipment is easier than robbing a bank, making it a primary target, and likened the stolen components to pure gold bars. NBC has identified approximately two dozen such cargo thefts across the U.S. since last year.
