High interest in BMW's voluntary separation program: Intranet system crashes
BMW's voluntary separation program for its administrative and development units in Germany led to a crash of the internal digital portal due to overwhelming employee interest. Applications were halted as target quotas were reached in less than two weeks.
The personnel reduction program launched by German automotive giant BMW in its German organization created significant internal demand due to the financial packages offered. The internal intranet infrastructure temporarily became inaccessible as thousands of employees attempted to log in simultaneously to check their severance amounts.
It was announced that the target quotas envisioned by management for the program, which began on October 8, 2026, were reached in less than two weeks. While BMW's spokesperson did not share exact participant numbers, they announced that new applications for the program have been officially halted. According to Handelsblatt data, severance amounts offered to some senior and high-level employees exceeded 650,000 euros.
The program covers management, administrative units, and development departments across Germany, while production line workers were excluded from the process. The company aims to eliminate approximately 8,000 positions in its global operations by the end of 2027.
