Historic Election in Serbia: Aleksandar Vučić Concedes Defeat to Student Movement
Aleksandar Vučić, who has been in power in Serbia for 12 years, conceded defeat by announcing that the student movement won the snap general elections. Voter turnout reached its highest level since 1992.
In the snap general elections held in Serbia, long-serving leader Aleksandar Vučić suffered defeat against the opposition led by the student movement. Speaking to his supporters at party headquarters in Belgrade, Vučić accepted the outcome, stating that preliminary results showed the student movement secured a majority in parliament.
According to data shared by CeSID-IPSPS, the Student List secured a majority in parliament with 138 deputies, while Vučić's Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) remained at 104 seats. Vučić stated that, according to his own estimates, the Student List would win between 135 and 140 seats, while his party would win around 105.
Voter turnout stood at 67.6 percent, marking the highest turnout recorded since the breakup of Yugoslavia in 1992. The process, which caused heightened political tension, had gained momentum with anti-government protests that began following the collapse of a concrete canopy at the Novi Sad railway station in November 2024, where 16 people lost their lives.
