Ilhan Omar's lawyers challenge federal search of her home
Lawyers for U.S. Representative Ilhan Omar have requested the return of items seized during a federal search of her home. The legal team argues the operation was unlawful and politically motivated, while the Department of Justice denied the allegations, stating that legal procedures were followed.
Attorneys for Minnesota Democratic Representative Ilhan Omar have petitioned the U.S. Department of Justice for the return of items taken from Omar's home by federal agents. In a letter reported by the Associated Press, the lawyers argued that the search and seizure operation was "neither justified nor legal."
As part of an investigation launched weeks before the November 3 midterm elections, it was reported that federal authorities seized Omar's phone and issued grand jury subpoenas. Omar's legal team stated that allegations regarding violations of laws related to her citizenship status have no legitimate basis, characterizing the process as "vindictive and political."
Department of Justice spokesperson Emily Covington stated that the claims in the lawyers' letter contained misinformation and that law enforcement acted in accordance with all court orders. Fox News suggested the search was linked to a fraud investigation concerning Omar's immigration documents. Ilhan Omar denied the allegations, describing the events as an attempt at political intimidation. President Donald Trump stated that he had no involvement in the investigation.
