Iraq closes Sheeb border crossing with Iran to review security, sources say

Iraq has indefinitely closed the busy Sheeb border crossing on its border with Iran to review security measures and install detection devices to curb smuggling.

According to an Iraqi border official, the Sheeb border crossing was closed to passenger, vehicle, and commercial truck traffic in line with a decision taken to halt the transit of prohibited substances. Valiollah Hayati, a security official from Iran's Khuzestan province, confirmed that the decision was made by the Iraqi government.

No exact date has been given for when the border crossing, known as Chazabeh on the Iranian side, will reopen. Hayati stated that talks are ongoing between the Iranian Ministry of Interior and local Iraqi officials for the resumption of border operations. Officials advised travelers and drivers intending to cross to use the Shalamcheh border crossing as an alternative.
