Israel drills for surprise attack with massive military exercise as expert invokes 1973 war

The Israeli military launched a large-scale military exercise on Sunday to prevent potential infiltrations and surprise attacks on border regions. The exercise, which is planned to last 48 hours, involves numerous divisions and air force units.

The exercise involves the 210th Division of the Northern Command, the West Bank Division, and the 98th and 96th divisions of the Central Command. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that these maneuvers aim to maintain force readiness and increase the capacity to defend residential areas in light of lessons learned from the October 7, 2023, attacks.

Security analyst Dr. Ehud Eilam stated that the exercise focuses on non-state actors in Syria, Lebanon, and Jordan, and carries a message of deterrence against Iran ahead of the October 27 elections. While rising regional tensions and Iran's recent displays of power have led experts to warn that such large-scale movements carry a risk of miscalculation, some observers are comparing the situation to the 1973 Yom Kippur War.
