‘It’s collective punishment’: nearly 2,000 Palestinians in Hebron displaced as Israeli forces take over homes

Following an armed attack on a military checkpoint in Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank, on Friday that resulted in the deaths of two soldiers, the Israeli army launched a large-scale operation. As part of the operation, the Farsh al-Hawa neighborhood was leveled, while approximately 2,000 Palestinians in the Ein Deir Baha area were forced to leave their homes.

According to Hebron Municipality data, 370 families were affected by the evacuations. Local residents stated that soldiers entered their homes at night, forced them outside, and began using some properties as operational bases. Residents such as Fahed Ahmaro and 77-year-old Abdul Halim al-Tamimi expressed the hardships they experienced during the evacuation process.

The Israeli army claimed that those evacuated left the area voluntarily and that the area in question was linked to Hamas. Local residents reject these claims. Hebron Mayor Yousef al-Jabari described the events as politically motivated "collective punishment" ahead of the upcoming Israeli elections.
