Javier Milei: Winds of Change Support Argentina's Falkland Islands Claim
Argentine President Javier Milei stated that global winds of change are supporting his country's claims over the Falkland Islands.
In a televised national address, Argentine President Javier Milei stated that global winds of change are supporting Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands, and hinted that the US might reassess its position.
Winds of Change and Emphasis on the US
Argentine President Javier Milei stated in a televised speech that winds of change are blowing across the world that support Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands.
Milei argued that behind this situation are indications that Donald Trump might review the US's historical position regarding the islands.
Sanctions on Oil Extraction Initiatives
Announcing new decrees in his speech, Milei targeted Israeli company Navitas and its British partner Rockhopper, which are involved in an offshore oil project in the North Falkland Basin.
The Argentine leader asserted that sanctions against those participating in this project would be accelerated and that these initiatives violate UN resolutions.
Increasing Defense Resources
Despite radical austerity policies, Milei announced that he would sign an emergency decree to increase the defense ministry's resources.
Within this scope, it was stated that priority would be given to the construction of an integrated naval base in Tierra del Fuego, which began in 2022.
The UK and the Right to Self-Determination
The UK, meanwhile, emphasized that its position on the Falkland Islands is deep-rooted and unshakeable, and that sovereignty will remain with the UK.
Rejecting the UK's principle of self-determination for the inhabitants of the island, Milei argued that the islands belong to Argentina.
