Jordan Strikes Armed Groups in Syria, Civilians Killed in Syria
Following a church attack in the city of Karak, Jordan launched airstrikes against armed groups in Syria. Meanwhile, Syria stated that civilians lost their lives in the strikes.
The Jordanian air force carried out air operations against armed groups in Syria on Monday evening following an attack on a church in the city of Karak that resulted in nine deaths. While the Jordanian side reported that numerous militants were neutralized in the operation, Syrian authorities announced that civilians lost their lives in the airstrikes across the Daraa and As-Suwayda provinces.
In a statement made by the Jordanian air force, it was noted that the operation targeted elements and vehicles belonging to terrorist groups. On the other hand, the Syrian civil defense agency reported that the bodies of seven people, including women and children, were recovered from the airstrikes in the Daraa and As-Suwayda provinces. The Syrian government stated that the operation was carried out without any prior coordination or notification with its authorities and that the main border crossing with Jordan was closed.
Early Monday, Jordanian authorities detained three men following a pre-dawn clash in connection with the attack carried out during a funeral at an Orthodox church in Karak, south of the capital Amman, which injured more than twenty people. The Public Security Directorate announced that the captured suspects were brothers Hazzah Zaidan Mohammad and Mishal Zaidan Mohammad, along with their brother-in-law Ahmad Sami Hussein. Authorities noted that the suspects had no links to any organization, acted on their own behalf, and that ammunition was seized at the scene.
