Where's Macron? French leader blasted for attending concert as riots escalated

French President Emmanuel Macron has drawn criticism for attending a Celine Dion concert at a time when planned demonstrations across the country against the cost of living, school conditions, and deteriorating public services have turned violent. Macron attended the concert in Nanterre alongside his wife, Brigitte, following his return from a European Council meeting in Brussels. During the demonstrations, approximately 1,800 people were detained, hundreds of security personnel were injured, and the historic town hall in Limoges sustained damage.

Demonstrations organized in France over the cost of living, school conditions, and inadequate public services quickly escalated into clashes with police, fires, looting, and attacks on public buildings. Approximately 1,800 people were detained nationwide, including 855 in the Paris region. Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez announced that more than 500 security personnel, including police officers, gendarmes, and firefighters, were injured. A protester died of a heart attack during the demonstrations in Paris. In the city of Limoges, a fire reportedly set intentionally caused major damage to the historic town hall. In numerous cities, including Paris, Bordeaux, Marseille, and Lyon, shops were looted, and public buildings were set on fire and vandalized. While authorities estimated participation in the events at over 550,000 people, organizers reported the figure to be around 800,000. Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard stated in an interview with French television that 50 company stores were damaged, 20 stores were looted, and tens of millions of euros in financial losses were incurred.
