Martin Sheen urges revival of USAID at World Food Prize

Actor and humanitarian advocate Martin Sheen, at the opening of the 2026 Borlaug International Dialogue held in Des Moines, Iowa, emphasized the importance of the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), which was shut down in 2025, in global food security and humanitarian aid processes, and called for the agency's revitalization.

Stating that USAID, established in 1961 by President John F. Kennedy, managed billions of dollars in key areas such as hunger, healthcare, housing, education, and clean water worldwide for over 60 years, Sheen noted that humanitarian crises have escalated rapidly following the agency's closure.

Sheen argued that serious efforts should be pursued to restore USAID to its former function, and that if these efforts prove fruitless, the establishment of a new agency capable of undertaking similar missions should be considered.
