Massive Data Centre for Anthropic's AI Models Being Built in Nova Scotia
EverWind Fuels is building a massive data centre in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia, to support Anthropic's Claude artificial intelligence models. Scheduled to become operational by the end of 2027, the facility will add a total capacity of 420 megawatts to the region.
A large-scale data centre project to power artificial intelligence technologies has been launched in Nova Scotia, Canada, near Cape Breton Island. Implemented by EverWind Fuels and leased for 20 years for Anthropic's Claude models, the facility aims to transform the region's energy infrastructure and economic balance.
Technical Details and Capacity of the Project
The data centre to be built in the Point Tupper region will be implemented in a two-stage plan. In the first phase, a 95-megawatt capacity will be commissioned by the end of 2027, and in the second phase, with an additional 325 megawatts to be added in 2028, the total capacity will reach 420 megawatts.
In addition to an $8 billion private equity investment to meet the facility's energy needs, a $2 billion budget has been allocated for four onshore wind power plants.
Environmental and Social Impacts
A closed-loop water-glycol cooling system drawing water from Landrie Lake is planned within the scope of the project. Additionally, a consortium of Mi’kmaw communities is continuing discussions to acquire a nine percent equity stake in the project.
Environmental organizations such as the Ecology Action Centre have expressed concerns regarding the project's scale, environmental impacts, and potential financial burdens on electricity consumers.
Construction Process and Management
With land clearing work currently underway, officials aim to complete ground-breaking procedures before the winter season begins. EverWind and Anthropic have committed to complying with responsible data centre development principles at the federal and provincial levels.
