Match-fixing investigation in Greek basketball: 922 thousand euros found in referees' homes
In a match-fixing and bribery investigation covering approximately 50 matches between 2016 and 2026 in Greek basketball, a total of 922 thousand euros in cash was seized in the homes of two referees.
In a sweeping investigation launched over allegations of match manipulation in the Greek basketball league, a large amount of cash was found in the homes of two referees. It was reported that 820 thousand euros were seized in the home of former referee Petros Papapetrou in the city of Katerini, and 102 thousand euros in the home of another referee whose name was not disclosed.
It was stated that the investigation was expanded, upon complaints regarding the federation's operations, to cover approximately 50 matches between 2016 and 2026. While two protected informants testified as witnesses, referees and federation officials are also planned to be questioned.
Following these developments, Panathinaikos Basketball Club announced it will resort to legal action. Head coach Ergin Ataman's past criticisms regarding refereeing management came back to the agenda following the scandal.
