Mercedes-Benz CEO Källenius Warns Against Europe's Production Policies
Mercedes-Benz CEO and ACEA President Ola Källenius warned that Europe becoming isolated through local content rules and supply chain restrictions will drive up production costs.
Speaking at the Berlin Global Dialogue, Mercedes-Benz CEO and European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) President Ola Källenius drew attention to the potential economic consequences of the European Union's 'Made in Europe'-focused production strategies.
Källenius stated that modern automobile production relies on global supply chains, and while Europe turning into an 'island' through local content rules and restrictions might increase resilience, it would significantly raise costs. It was emphasized that the EU's policies aimed at protecting domestic manufacturers against vehicle imports from China could put strategic partners such as Japan and South Korea at a disadvantage.
Urging the EU to be cautious about protectionism in his capacity as ACEA President, Källenius argued that more trade agreements should be made. Assessment: Källenius's remarks reflect the difficulties the European automotive sector faces in maintaining the delicate balance between preserving global competitiveness and increasing local production capacity.
