Miami University Establishes Artificial Intelligence Center
The university's Board of Trustees has approved the creation of a new artificial intelligence center that will bring together research, corporate partnerships, and ethical evaluations.
Miami University has appointed Dennis Cheatham to lead the newly established Artificial Intelligence Center, which aims to examine both the potential benefits and harms of AI.
New Artificial Intelligence Center
The Miami University Board of Trustees has approved the opening of a new center that will conduct research in the field of artificial intelligence and build corporate partnerships. Experience design professor Dennis Cheatham has been appointed to lead this initiative.
Corporations and Practical Experience
The center aims to establish partnerships with major regional companies, such as Procter & Gamble and local aerospace firms, as well as technology companies. The goal is to translate academic research into products, patents, and practical experience for students.
Skeptical and Testing Approach
Despite being the leader of the initiative, Dennis Cheatham describes himself as a skeptic who advocates testing the technology rather than abandoning it. The university plans to approach this technology from a multi-faceted perspective.
Steps by Regional Universities
Other universities in Southwest Ohio are also advancing artificial intelligence education. Xavier University opened The Loop, the University of Cincinnati introduced BearcatGPT, and the University of Dayton made it mandatory for first-year students to study the fundamentals of artificial intelligence.
AI Initiative in Departments
Miami University is launching the 'AI in Majors' initiative to integrate artificial intelligence into the curriculum of at least one major in every department by May 2027.
Multi-Faceted Review and Events
The center will examine artificial intelligence from 14 different perspectives, including security, art, and public discourse. It also plans to establish a national advisory board and host a symposium next April.
