Konya'daki Beş Milyon Yıllık Volkanik Gölde Mikrobiyal Keşif Gerçekleştirildi

As a result of scientific studies conducted by the Selçuk University Agriculture and Climate Change Application and Research Center in the lake located in Konya's Karapınar district, which was formed by a volcanic eruption five million years ago, important microbial samples were identified and taken under protection.

Scientific Study in the Volcanic Lake

A comprehensive study was conducted by the Selçuk University Agriculture and Climate Change Application and Research Center in the five-million-year-old volcanic lake located in Konya's Karapınar district. Within the scope of this research, numerous samples were collected from the lake bed and its surroundings.

Samples Preserved at Minus 80 Degrees

The microbial samples identified during the research are preserved in a laboratory environment at minus 80 degrees in order to revive the lake in the event of a possible loss of biodiversity or ecosystem degradation.

Beneficial Bacteria for Agricultural Production

As a result of the ongoing studies, beneficial bacteria capable of being utilized in agricultural production and contributing to climate change adaptation processes were obtained. Experts stated that these bacteria are promising for the agricultural sector.

Transfer to Future Generations and Future Plans

Center Director Prof. Dr. Kubilay Kurtuluş Baştaş emphasized that it is of critical importance to transfer the microbial heritage of the lake to future generations. Baştaş noted that salt-tolerant bacteria related to phosphate, phosphorus, nitrogen, and sulfur have been identified.
