The James Webb Space Telescope has detected a strong radiation signal whose origin has not yet been determined in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, one of the most thoroughly studied regions of the universe.
Mysterious Radiation Signal
The James Webb Space Telescope detected a strong radiation signal of as yet undetermined origin in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, one of the most thoroughly studied regions of the universe. Scientists are struggling to explain which celestial body the signal, recorded again during different observations, belongs to.
A Single Strong Line
Researchers detected a single strong emission line at a wavelength of approximately 1.6 micrometers in the infrared light spectrum. While multiple lines normally make it easier to identify the source, this single strong line and the unImaged source have baffled researchers.
New Observation Method MOCSS
The research team developed the Multi-Object Coronagraphy with Slitless Spectroscopy method using the NIRSpec near-infrared spectrometer. This system allowed for the investigation of weak radiation sources by limiting the light of brighter objects.
Repeated Observations
The mysterious signal was recorded at four different observation positions and from two separate angles. The repeated detection of the signal under different conditions largely reduces the probability that it is a simple instrument error or an observational artifact.
Evaluated Possibilities
Scientists examined whether the signal originated from hydrogen and oxygen emission lines. Although scenarios where the redshift value ranges between 1.44 and 12.16 were evaluated, current data was not sufficient to confirm these explanations.
Black Holes and Transient Events
Among the evaluated possibilities are that the signal originates from an active galactic nucleus or a transient astrophysical event. However, available data does not conclusively support any of these possibilities.
